17 Days Birding And Bird Photography Tours In Sabah, Borneo


Birding tours at Kinabalu National Park, Danum Valley Forest Reserve, Kinabatangan River and Tambunan Rafflesia Centre



Day 1-6 : Kinabalu National Park / Poring Hot Spring Sub-station

Depart early to Kinabalu National Park for 5 nights. This is one of the best places in borneo to search for the endemic such as the Whitehead’s Trogon, Broadbill and Spidehunter. Has excellent trails and daily temperature is around 22 degree celcius. Early start in the morning at power station would yield species that is confined to the montane forest such as Mountain Blackeye. Includes overnight at Poring hot spring for hill forest species such as Scaly-breasted Bulbul, Crested Jay and Gold-whiskered Barbet. Overnight.

Day 6-8 : Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary

Drive for few hours to Sepilok passing to one of the best scenery in Sabah and few stops along the main road for Raptors and other birds. Check in to Sepilok Nature Resort and birding at Rainforest Discovery Centre and Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary. Overnight. Main highlight is Bornean Bristlehead, Blue-headed Pitta and White-fronted Falconet.

Day 8-11 : Kinabatangan River (Sukau Village)

Drive overland to Kinabatangan River which is famed for its wildlife such as wild Orang Utans, Proboscis Monkeys, Silver Leaf Monkeys, Bornean Pygmy Elephants and over 200 species of birds has been recorded here. Notable birds are the Bornean Ground Cuckoo, Rhinoceros Hornbill, Blue-headed Pitta and White-fronted Falconet. Cruise along the river including walking along the trail which is used by the hunters in the olden days. Overnight.

Day 11-15 : Danum Valley Forest Reserve (Borneo Rainforest Lodge)

Transfer to Danum Valley Forest Reserve and took about 3 hours drive from Sukau Lodge. Check in to Borneo Rainforest Lodge and spend the next 6 days birding in this beautiful reserved. Target species such as Black and crimson and Giant Pitta, Black-throated Wren Babbler and Bornean Bristlehead. Night walk and drive for nocturnal species. Overnight.

Day 15 :

Birding in the morning and after lunch, transfer to Lahad Datu airport for flight back to Kota Kinabalu. Overnight.

Day 16 : Tambunan Rafflesia Centre

Drive to Tambunan Rafflesia Centre located at the south of Sabah for other endemic of Borneo such as Bornean and Mountain Barbet, Black-breasted Fruit-hunter and Bornean Bulbul. Lunch served at local restaurant. On the way back, visit Lok Kawi beach and Likas Lagoon for waterbirds. Overnight.

Day 17 : Manukan Island

Take a speedboat to Manukan island for Tabon Scrubfowl, Mangrove Whistler and Green Imperial Pigeon. Suitable for relaxing and swimming at the South China Sea. After BBQ lunch, depart back to kota kinabalu. End of tours.
